KEENE CENTRAL VOICES: Keene Central School ready for another successful academic year

September 14, 2018
By DANIEL MAYBERRY - Keene Central School Superintendent , Lake Placid News

Keene Central School welcomes the start of another year. Time since graduation and the end of the 2017-2018 school year has been spent fixing and/or updating items, but more importantly, time was spent getting ready for the return of students, faculty and staff in September.

Summertime brings a welcomed calm to the building that even the summer work cannot disturb. As an educator, there is nothing more exciting than being in a school when it is full of students and the vibe you get from all of the activities taking place.

We live and work in one of the most beautiful places on Earth and are fortunate to live, work and play in such a great place. Being in the Adirondacks enhances the quality of the experiences we have and the relationships we build here because we appreciate everything we have and how hard we have worked for it.

As a small district in the mountains, we understand the challenges we face in getting students experiences that larger and more metropolitan areas may take for granted. Our commitment to our mission - "Let each become all he or she is capable of becoming" - reminds us every day of the importance of our duty and the realization that we, like all schools, are shaping the future of our communities, nation and the world.

Programs like our outdoor elementary education called Forest Fridays, lifetime fitness focus of our high school physical education classes, International Student Program, Mindset of the month with its character education focus, our healthy food in the cafeteria prepared from scratch, garden club and our composting program all strengthen our educational program. We also understand the importance of taking care of each other along with the increasing mental health needs, and we strive to ensure that everyone's needs are being met. Meeting those needs falls on each and every one of us, not just our counseling staff.

Staying focused on the students and the hopes and dreams we have for them is our most important focus. We are college and career focused.

Even for students who do not intend to go to college, we ensure they all have the opportunity to get there if they so choose. We want all of our students to possess the skills and attitudes that will make them successful and allow them to thrive in life beyond their time with us here at KCS.

We will continue our work on building and maintaining strong relationships with our greatest supporters: Keene community, parents and families, High Peaks Education Foundation, local leaders, service providers and everyone who helps us accomplish our shared mission. All of these relationships help to provide the best educational opportunities to our students.

We look forward to another year of opportunities and experiences where our students grow and succeed.

Have a great year!
