Thanks to all who helped save a triathlete’s life during Ironman 70.3 Lake Placid

Lake Placid News

To the editor:

As we wrap up the second running of Ironman 70.3 Lake Placid, I am extremely grateful to be a part of a community that not only supports and cheers visitors from around the world but also works together as a team in times of need.

We had an athlete collapse just minutes from the finish line on Sunday while suffering cardiac arrest. Within seconds, spectators, other athletes including an emergency room resident, race volunteers, EMS crews and staff were on scene performing CPR and assisting at the scene. After an agonizing 10-plus minutes of efforts, he regained a pulse. The athlete was transported to the ER in Lake Placid and then flown via New York State Police Helicopter/Lifeflight to CVPH in Plattsburgh, where he is currently recovering (as of Wednesday, Sept. 12) and expected to be discharged.

While we are happy to have put on a great race for our athletes, we are aware that there are more important things happening. I cannot begin to express my admiration and respect for the pros that save lives and volunteer their time to help others. This could have gone very badly, but luckily the outcome was tremendous. My thanks go out to the 911 dispatch team from Essex County, Lake Placid Police Department, Saranac Lake Rescue Squad, Lake Placid Volunteer Ambulance Service, Lake Placid Volunteer Fire Department, Lifeflight, Adirondack Medical Center ER staff, New York State Police, and Ironman staff and volunteers. This was a total team effort that paid off to save a life.

Thank you to the community that I have been happy to be a part of for over 50 years. And thank you to the heroes on Sunday (Sept. 9) who made it possible for an athlete to go home to his wife and children.
