ZONTA CLUB NEWS: An amazing Adirondack day for Zonta Club and local families

August 10, 2018
By AMY QUINN - Zonta Club of the Adirondacks , Lake Placid News

On Sunday, July 15, the Zonta Club of the Adirondacks held its inaugural Amazing Adirondack Race in the Lake Placid area.

This charity fundraiser sent teams totaling 70 racers through 12 pitstop locations, discovered by solving puzzles and riddles. At each location, teams faced a unique challenge, ranging from local trivia, first aid skills, and dance routines to song performances, a swim challenge and supermarket games.

The goal of the day was to be the first team to locate the secret finish line party. This exciting event raised over $5,000 for the Zonta Club's brand new scholarship fund, which will allow them to bring more good things to more great women!

Racers ranged in age from 4 to 84 and included families, co-workers, and even girlfriends celebrating a birthday. Team Young Rangers, comprised of local sisters Gabby and Nina Armstrong together with cousins Emily Leyden and Brian Woods, was first to locate the finish line party at Mount Pisgah Ski Area in Saranac Lake. This strong team effort earned them the grand prize, the BIG ENCHILADA: a beautiful new Kula cooler stuffed with gift certificates for local experiences all over the Adirondacks valued at more than $3,000.

All participants ended the race with a picnic-style party, including subs, chimichangas, hot pretzels, cookies, ice cream, cold beer and soft drinks.

"We made it to the end of the race with smiles, laughter and sweat!" said Lake Placid's Trish Friedlander. "We did what we thought we couldn't and we're already in training for next year!"

Tonya Barry of Saranac Lake called the day "a great family bonding experience." The Cinar family of Massachusetts echoed this with, "Hands down the best charity event we've ever participate in! Singing, dancing, swimming, even some playground time. The whole family had a blast!"

Allison McGahay of Lake Placid noted that the race brought their team to new-to-them landmarks, including the River Walk in Saranac Lake and Lake Placid's new adventure course, Experience Outdoors.

The Harris family, new residents of Lake Placid, remarked that they loved how it brought out the different strengths in their family.

Kathi Gereau of Westport said, "It was obvious how much thought went into planning this race. We learned historical facts about the area, discovered super fun spots we'll return to, and had a lot of laughs! You can count me in for next year's Amazing Adirondack Race!"
