LAKE PLACID - The Lake Placid High School cross-country running team is raising money this year by hosting a new running series, dubbed the Slippery Slope 5K in honor of the icy roads participants have taken on over the winter.

The race series, which began in January, will have its last race of the season on Saturday, April 14. Cost to register is $25, with all proceeds going to the high school team's travel fund for invitationals. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. at the Lake Placid High School gym, with a race time of 10 a.m.

Blue Bombers coach Mel Frazer said in an email that runners are setting a blistering pace, although the series is open to runners and walkers alike.

"Even with the new snow on the sidewalks and roads, and the icy conditions - new course records were set on Saturday," Frazer said. "Mike Skutt holds the male's course record in 20 minutes, 25 seconds, and Elizabeth Izzo broke the women's course record with 21:15."

The top three overall finishers get medals, and the top three finishers in each age group get ribbons.

To pre-register, go to Registration can also be done prior to the race at the gym.
