LAKE PLACID - River Road is closed because of ice jams and flooding from the West Branch of the AuSable River today.

When the Enterprise was on the scene around 11 a.m. this morning there was minor flooding on the road but nothing too hazardous, and it was open and drivable all the way through. Some houses down the road from Mountain Lake Academy heading toward state Route 86 got hit the worst. As temperatures reached 50 degrees above zero, entire front yards and driveways were flooded with ice and water.

For a short time all eastbound traffic on state Route 73 was diverted down River Road because of a three-vehicle collision at the head of Adirondack Loj Road.

The detour was brief, and River Road was closed at approximately noon, according to a member of the Lake Placid Volunteer Fire Department.

Other areas in the North Country suffered from floods, too. Fort Covington in northwest Franklin County entered a state of emergency after the Salmon River rose, causing certain neighborhoods to be evacuated. Neaby, an ice jam in the St. Regis River flooded communities such as St. Regis, Hogansburg and Helena.
