Pyeongchang mascot and medals

February 9, 2018
Lake Placid News

Soohorang is the mascot of the Pyeongchang 2018 Olympic Winter Games. It is a white tiger, which has been long considered Korea's guardian animal.

"Sooho" means protection in Korean and symbolizes the protection offered to the athletes, spectators and other participants of the 2018 games. "Rang" comes from the middle letter of "Ho-rang-i" - the Korean word for "tiger," - and is also the last letter of "Jeong-seon A-ri-rang" - a cherished traditional folk song of Gangwon Province, where the games are being held.

Olympic medals

The medals for the Pyeongchang 2018 Olympic Winter Games were created by designer Lee Suk-woo, who incorporated Hangeul - the Korean alphabet and the foundation of Korean culture - into their design through a series of three-dimensional consonants. These consonants stretch across the face of the medals to the edge, where they come together to spell "Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018." As a result, they create dynamic diagonal lines that reflect both the history of the Olympics and the determination of the competitors vying for a place on the podium.
