Anthony tops giant slalom field

The Saranac Lake and Lake Placid high school alpine teams have been busy this week with slalom races at Mount Pisgah in Saranac Lake on Wednesday and giant slalom Tuesday at Whiteface Mountain in Wilmington.

Local racers swept the boys podium at Whiteface with Gunnar Anthony, of Lake Placid, taking first, followed by Saranac Lake skiers Andrew Fogarty and Sully Fogarty. Anthony put down runs of 41.0 and 40.8 seconds for a combined time of 1:21.8. Andrew Fogarty was a smidge behind with a 1:21.9 and Sully Fogarty came in at 1:22.4.

Old Forge's Alex Sutherland won the girls giant slalom race with a two-run time of 1:23.4. Angelica DeGuardia, of Lowville, was second in 1:26.2 and Saranac Lake's Ryley Fischer placed third in 1:26.6. Barrett Smith, of Lake Placid, took sixth with a time of 1:29.2.

Tuesday's races were part of the Lake Placid High School Winter Carnival.

Fischer came back Wednesday with a second-place finish in the slalom race at Mount Pisgah. She put down times of 40.05 seconds and 42.24 seconds for a total time of 1:22.29. Sutherland won the race with a 1:20.19.

Charlie Uzdavinis, of Old Forge, won the boys slalom race with a two-run time of 1:18.93. Andrew Fogarty was second with a 1:20.17 and Sully Fogarty was fourth with a 1:21.83.

Lake Placid skier Parker Anthony placed seventh in 1:32.5 and teammate Tim Kelleher took eighth in 1:32.88.
