Santa comes to town this weekend in Lake Placid

LAKE PLACID - New York's Olympic village is inviting residents and visitors to experience a festive start to the season as it hosts the 9th Holiday Village Stroll - complete with holiday shopping, family fun, arts and entertainment - from Friday, Dec. 8 through Sunday, Dec. 10.

The Holiday Village Stroll weekend is packed with plenty of activities for kids and families, including a skating party, opportunities to visit with Santa, holiday movie screenings at the Palace Theatre, a tree-lighting ceremony, holiday crafts, story time and cookie decorating.

Lake Placid's Main Street will feature with ice sculptures, holiday shopping deals, specialty drinks, a Paint & Taste event and live music. In addition, the Jingle Bell Run/Walk is a fun race on a 2.5-mile course around Mirror Lake in which visitors and locals compete. It starts at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at the village beach.

Highlights of the Holiday Village Stroll weekend include:

-Free skating party at the Olympic Center's 1932 Rink from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday

-A Craft & Vendor Fair from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Adirondack Community Church

-Holiday Story Time from 11 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Mirror Lake Inn

-Santa's arrival by fire truck on Main Street from noon until 1 p.m. Saturday.

-Traditional Yule Log Hunt at 4:30 p.m. Saturday on the lawn of the Lake House. The lighting of the log will commence at Mid's Park following the hunt.

-Mid's Park Holiday Celebration with tree lighting and special performance with the Lake Placid school chorus starting at 5 p.m. Saturday

-Free sleigh rides around Mirror Lake, sponsored by Paul Smith's College, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. Pick up and drop off will be at Mid's Park.

-Breakfast with Santa from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday and Sunday at different locations

-Free classic holiday movie at the Palace Theatre, with "The Polar Express" starting at 11 a.m. Sunday

-"Golden Ladle" soup, chili and chowder competition with complimentary tastings for all, provided by local dining establishments

In addition to the Stroll activities, area hotels are offering tremendous special package rates on accommodations, Main Street and Placid Pond businesses are offering shopping promotions, and area restaurants are offering specials all weekend long.
