LAKE PLACID - Making mistakes and giving up corner kicks against a quality opponent can be costly.

The Lake Placid girls soccer team found that out the hard way Wednesday in a 4-2 loss to Seton Catholic. The Knights scored twice off miscues by the Lake Placid defense and notched two more goals on corner kick plays to improve to 4-0-2 in Northern Soccer League Division II action and 5-0-2 overall.

Mackenzie Kondrat netted both goals for the Blue Bombers, who fell to 3-2 in league play.

Seton Catholic broke a 1-1 tie after intermission with a three-goal effort in the second half. Sydney Falb scored twice for the Knights and Carolyn Spittler and Abby Boule added a goal apiece in the win.

"We had defensive lapses that hurt, and we allowed a couple of corner kicks that resulted in goals," Lake Placid head coach Brenden Gotham said. "That's why we stress don't give up corners because they're a threat at all times."

It took the Knights just 5:03 to notch the game's first goal, which came on a misplayed ball by Lake Placid netminder Shelby Jewtraw and was credited to Falb. Kondrat evened the match at the 13:55 mark off an assist by Lydia Bullock to send the teams into halftime deadlocked at 1-1.

Seton Catholic then netted two goals on corner kicks that were both set up by Haley Murnane to take a 3-1 advantage. The first one came 11:36 into the second half when Murnane sent a high, arcing kick into the box and Boule knocked the ball into the net through traffic. The next goal was scored by Spittler at the 22:57 mark when she took control of a pass in front of the net and sent a low shot into the far corner.

Spittler's goal held up as the game-winner, but Lake Placid did climb back into the match, albeit briefly. After struggling to put pressure on the Knights, the Blue Bombers turned the heat up during the later stages of the second half and generated some advances into Seton Catholic's end of the field. They were rewarded for the effort when Bullock was hauled down in the Knights' penalty box, which resulted in a penalty kick with just under 10 minutes remaining in the match. Kondrat took the shot and banged it off the crossbar into the net, and all of a sudden Lake Placid was facing a single-goal deficit with the score at 3-2.

The Blue Bombers chances at a comeback faded quickly. On the kickoff following Kondrat's goal, the Knights sent the ball into Lake Placid's end of the field, and two defenders collided while attempting to gain control. Charging toward the play, Falb scooped up the loose ball and broke in alone on Jewtraw for an easy goal.

"We finally shook the bus ride off and just played our game," Seton Catholic head coach Ariel Masten said. "We pass really well and we have a good group of girls who have played together for a long time. We passed well through the middle, and we've been working on corner kicks. We were able to get a body on them and got some goals. We just kept up the pressure We didn't want to get comfortable with the lead."

"Seton played very well," Gotham said. "The momentum really shifted with their first goal. It was a fluke goal. We were down 1-0 and playing from behind most of the game. We battled back. We were right back in it when Mac hammered it home with 10 minutes left. We had it down to 3-2 and then they scored off the kickoff.

"That was not our best effort today," Gotham continued. "We need to work on distributing. That was a tough one, but we're young. We'll be OK, we just have to regroup."

Seton Catholic next plays Friday at home against Chazy. The Blue Bombers will look to rebound in their next match, which is also on Friday at home against Northern Adirondack starting at 4:30 p.m.
