Schulz stings dual meet field

LAKE PLACID - The Lake Placid cross country team continued its winning ways Tuesday, besting several local schools in a four-way dual meet at the Mount Van Hoevenberg biathlon course.

With the sun blazing down, the Blue Bombers went one-two-three in the boys' race, while the girls claimed the two-three-four spots in the meet, which included AuSable Valley, EKMW and Beekmantown.

Scott Schulz placed first for the boys on a slightly modified course, completing it in 17 minutes, 17 seconds. Schulz was followed across the line by Jesse Izzo (17:38) and Kai Frantz (18:08).

On the girls' side, Jay resident and Ausable Valley runner Lily Potthast (21:33) claimed the top spot, just ahead of Lake Placid's Marli Damp (22:01), Annie Rose-McCandlish (22:29) and Sara Rose-McCandlish (23:16).

Lake Placid won both the boys and girls races in the dual meet, with the boys walloping Beekmantown 16-44 and AuSable Valley 15-44. The girls squeaked by with wins of 25-32 over Beekmantown and 27-28 over AuSable Valley.

Schulz, a senior who has been a stalwart on the Blue Bombers' running and nordic skiing teams throughout his high school career, said the course was changed after the team discovered a large bee hive during training on Monday.

"I was just coming up behind them and someone behind us yells 'Bees!'" he said. "I got stung and like two other guys got stung so we had to change the course up today because we couldn't spray them.

"But actually, I wouldn't mind running this course, it was actually a lot of fun."

In addition to the bees, all four teams were battling unseasonable heat as the thermometer neared 80 degrees.

"You've got to hydrate more during the day," Schulz said of the heat. "Of course, we're wearing basically nothing so it's not that bad. But also on the course you've gotta watch out for overheating."

Potthast, a junior, noticed the change in course as well.

"It was pretty nice, but I think they changed a few things on it so there was a lot more downhills which was nice but there were two really big killer hills," she said. "Other than that it was pretty nice, but really hot though.

"Ususally during the summer I run early in the morning like around 6 (a.m.) so there was no heat at all. Our coach told us not to kill ourselves because it is really hot out."

Lake Placid coach Mel Frazer said that so far, the season is going well for the Bombers despite losing some of the bigger name athletes who graduated last year.

"It's been going good. We didn't win the sectionals invite that we've won the last three years, but Saranac Lake ran well and the boys just didn't have it in them that day," Frazer said. "Both teams got fifth at the pre-state invite last week, so it's good.

"(Schulz) is just one of those kids, he works hard all the time. He stepped up this year, and he's done great with that. (Damp) is improving. A lot of the kids entered the season after training really hard for nordic skiing over the summer, but they'll get there.

"They run to ski to get in shape, so I'm all about letting them do that, and they'll get there. I'm not worried about it."

The Blue Bombers next meet is at McComb State Park against Peru, EKMW and Saranac on Monday.
