LAKE PLACID - A contingent from this village is in Taiwan to present to the International University Sports Federation's (FISU) Executive Committee about a Lake Placid-centric Adirondack bid to host the 2023 World University Winter Games.

The contingent is in Taipei City as the city hosts the 29th Summer Universiade between Aug. 19 and 30.

Speaking from San Francisco International Airport Monday evening, Aug. 14, Jim McKenna, the CEO of the Regional Office of Sustainable Tourism, said the Lake Placid contingent will present to FISU officials at several meetings Thursday through Saturday.

McKenna is joined on the trip by state Sen. Betty Little, R-Queensbury; state Olympic Regional Development Authority Executive Vice President Jeffery Byrne; Brendan Hughes, the assistant secretary of economic development for New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo's office; and Tait Wardlaw, the executive director of the Empire State Winter Games who is attending to report on sponsorships for a potential games.

McKenna said the contingent's introduction presentation will be to the 35-person FISU Executive Committee. He added that the contingent will subsequently meet with the United States International Sports University Federation, which represents the United States at the international collegiate level.

"This is to help move our bid forward," McKenna said, "before the start of the official process."

This trip follows a successful visit from FISU winter games officials in June, when Milan Augustin, director of FISU's Winter Universiade, lauded the Adirondacks' potential to host its event. It was noted then that Lake Placid is the only host city FISU is currently considering for the 2023 games.

McKenna reiterated that the formal bid submission for a 2023 World University Games would have to be completed by Dec. 31. The 2023 FISU games' location will be decided a few months later.

The World University Games is one of three world sporting events local officials want to bring to the area in a five-year span between 2019 to 2023.

The 2019 International Children's Games were awarded to Lake Placid last month, and officials also want to bring the Special Olympics World Winter Games to the Adirondacks, centered in Lake Placid, in 2021.
