ROTARY CLUB NEWS: Rotary gears up for Dam Duck Race

March 23, 2017

When you think of Father's Day weekend what comes to mind? Visiting with family, backyard cookouts, dad going golfing or sleeping in a hammock readily come to mind.

But for the Lake Placid area, for the past 14 years, it has also been the weekend of the very popular annual Rotary Club of Lake Placid Dam Duck Race. This year the race is scheduled for Saturday, June 17.

Imagine 1,200 little rubber ducks lined up in Mill Pond above the dam near Lisa G's restaurant. They are all nervous and eager to get started, having trained all year for this one event. The buzz of anticipation among the onlookers builds until, precisely at 7 p.m. the starter yells, "Go!" and, with a roar from the crowd, the ducks all sprint for the dam and the finish line downstream right next to the outside dining deck at Lisa G's.

The Rotary Club of Lake Placid's Annual Dam Duck Race is now a well-established traditional family event scheduled for the Saturday of Father's Day weekend, and is the club's largest fund raiser. At the first Dam Duck Race in 2003 there were only 200 ducks in the race but its popularity grew steadily to its current level.

Lisa G's Restaurant provides the perfect location to watch the race and partners with the Rotary Club to bring great food, games, face painting, a bounce house or two for the kids and overall just a fun party atmosphere. And who knows, again this year we might even see Lisa as a target at the Lisa G sponsored dunking booth.

The fundraising aspect of the Dam Duck Race is through sale of tickets to sponsor a duck in the race. Tickets sell for $10 per duck or 3 for $25.

First prize for the holder of the winning duck ticket is $1000, second prize is $200 and third prize is $100. There are also a whole bunch of consolation prizes, raffle tickets, duck hats, T-shirts and other ducky merchandise.

The Rotary Club uses the proceeds from this fund raiser to provide support for a number of local community groups and causes, including the Ecumenical Charity Food Program, American Red Cross, Lake Placid Beautification, Mercy Care for the Adirondacks, North Country Life Flight, North Elba Christmas Fund, Thomas Shipman Memorial Youth Center, United Way of the Adirondack Region and others.

Over the years, Lisa G's support for the Dam Duck Race has been invaluable as she virtually turns over her restaurant to the Rotary fund raising effort. Attendees can come early and enjoy Lisa G's special lasagna/pasta buffet dinner for $15, complete with yummy desserts! The proceeds from the dinner have also been generously donated to the Rotary Club by Lisa G.

So mark your calendar, buy your duck (or ducks) from a friendly Rotarian, gather your family and friends and come to Lisa G's in Lake Placid at 5 p.m. on June 17 for an evening of great fun, food and fundraising for great community projects and programs!

`The Lake Placid Rotary Club meets every Thursday morning from 7:20 to 8:30 a.m. at the Courtyard by Marriott. All are welcome.
