Over the first 10 days of March, our Olympic region hosted the 2017 U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association's junior national cross-country skiing championships. Over 400 boys and girls, ranging from 14 to 20 years old, competed in three different age categories for 24 U.S. national titles. It also provided a great opportunity for 17 local New York Ski Education Foundation athletes to participate and to compete with a hometown advantage.
The Olympic Development Authority, its staff and local volunteers did a superb job representing the rich sport heritage of Lake Placid in nordic skiing. Not only did ORDA host excellent sporting competitions under extreme weather and temperature swings; it provided the visiting athletes and families an experience that displays the best of Lake Placid. The use of the convention center as an athlete chill zone with a movie room, game room, concession and event merchandise provided a place where the athletes were able to mingle and meet peers from the 11 different regions across the United States. Many of the friendships made and memories shared here in Lake Placid during these events will last a lifetime.
ORDA's effort and execution during this week-long event was a gold-medal performance in all aspects of hosting this level of championships and once again why Lake Placid/North Elba is the "winter sports capital of the world." A great event, with a positive outcome that will ensure and enhance our community's abilities to secure these level of events in the future.
