LAKE PLACID - The Lake Placid Marathon and Half recently announced the designation of STOP Domestic Violence, a program component of Behavioral Health Services North, Inc., as a charity partner for the 2017 event to be held June 11 at the Olympic Speedskating Oval.

In conjunction with the newly stated goals of the race, an "animal charity" along with a "people charity" will be the beneficiary of a $2 surcharge in registration fees. One dollar from each athlete's fee will be donated to STOP Domestic Violence to assist their mission to provide direct services to survivors of domestic abuse and crime victims in the region.

Last year, approximately 1,000 racers participated and event organizers are hoping for at least that number in 2017.

Honoring National Women's Month, the Lake Placid Marathon and STOP Domestic Violence would like to spread the word about resources available for victims.

"We are grateful to have the Lake Placid Marathon reach out to us to further our goals," said Genie Denton. "Just raising awareness of the services we offer is a big part of our mission. Of course, we appreciate the funding but we want to make sure everyone in the North Country realizes they have a place to go in times of crisis."

The Lake Placid Marathon is entering its 13th year as the premier marathon and half marathon event in the region.

"We are happy to announce our 'people' charity this year and hope this helps draw attention to a great organization," said event organizer Greg Borzilleri. "STOP Domestic Violence is a wonderful group and we hope to help them however we can."

There will be a presence at the finish line of the marathon and half marathon in June where anyone can get information on domestic abuse prevention as well as their other services offered.

Since 2005, the Lake Placid Marathon and Half Marathon has been the go-to road race for locals and visitors alike. Designed to provide a running experience similar to the Ironman Lake Placid event, thousands of athletes every year flock to the area to train.

The timing in early June, the great opportunities for cross-event training as well as the beauty of the area bring athletes, families, spectators and others back year after year.

In 2017, for the first time in the event's history, it will serve as a Boston Marathon qualifying event.
