Deacon George R. Stewart

Deacon George R. Stewart, 75, a resident of the Hudson Valley for many years and most recently of Lake Placid, passed away on Oct. 11, 2016.

Born in Jamaica, Queens on July 24, 1941 and raised in the Bronx, he was the son of the late Mary and George R. Stewart.

George was ordained at St. Patrick's Cathedral in the Archdiocese of New York by his Eminence Terence Cardinal Cooke on May 28, 1983. He served as a deacon in the parish of St. Columba in Hopewell Junction. He also served the parishes of St. Agnes in Lake Placid, St. Margaret's in Wilmington, St. Bernard's in Keene, Regina Coeli in Hyde Park and St. Anthony of Padua in West Harrison.

George loved his family and the outdoors, including his beloved Adirondack Mountains. He enjoyed skiing, hiking, fly fishing, kayaking, painting, drawing, gardening, and especially driving and traveling to visit shrines and many other places.

George will be forever remembered by his wife and best friend of 51 years, Agnes; their seven children, Father George, Kevin, Dennis, Maureen, Heather, Tara and Ryan; son-in-law Bob Shilkunas; daughters-in-law Nicole and Sarah; and grandchildren Kevin, Bobby, Elizabeth, Dennis and Hunter.

George was the eldest of nine siblings and is survived by Mary, Donald, Daniel, Gregory, Bernadette and Ronald. He was predeceased by two siblings, Jennie and Robert.

Calling hours were held on Friday, Oct. 14, 2016 from 2 to 9 p.m. at the McHoul Funeral Home, Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Columba Church, 835 Route 82, Hopewell Junction. Interment will follow at St. Denis Cemetery.
