Robert E. Pendleton Jr., 94, of Friendship Village in Schaumburg, Illinois, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 12.

Born in St. John, New Brunswick, Canada, he was the son of Etta Berry and Robert Pendleton Sr.

Bob spent his childhood in Lake Placid, where he and his brother David enjoyed the beauty and sports associated with a Winter Olympic town. Bob served in World War II. His work as a medic at the military hospital formed his view about the horrors of war.

He graduated from Syracuse University with a master's degree in Education, and after the war married Phyllis (nee Chambers) in 1953. They moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where their two daughters, Susan and Carol were born and raised.

Bob worked in numerous social service agencies, including the Nationalities Service Center and the Philadelphia Housing Authority. He formed numerous neighborhood associations where he was a strong leader and advocate for integration. He was an active member of the United Methodist Church and also found time to teach ice skating, play tennis and write articles for the Lake Placid News and other local newspapers.

After retirement, he and Phyllis moved to Illinois to be closer to his grandchildren of whom he was extremely proud. There he enjoyed walking Busse Woods, and played bridge and tennis well into his 80s. Anyone who knew Bob knew his faith in the goodness of mankind never wavered.

Bob is survived by his wife Phyllis; daughters Susan (Leo) Rizzo and Carol (Marvin) Warshaw; grandchildren Joseph (Sarah Beth) Rizzo, Kathryn (Michael) Comstock), Teresa (Timothy) Larem, and Anthony Rizzo; and great-granddaughters Georgia and Penelope.

A memorial service will be held Friday, Oct. 21 at Prince of Peace United Methodist Church in Elk Grove Village, Illinois.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Veterans for Peace at app.etapestry.com/hosted/VeteransforPeace/OnlineDonation.html.
