Thanks for help with police hockey tourney

Lake Placid News

To the editor:

The annual Adirondack Police Hockey Tournament was held in Lake Placid from Sept. 16-18. This event involves police officers primarily from the northeastern U.S., Quebec and Ontario. We have in the past had departments from as far as Washington, D.C., Baltimore and North Carolina attend.

The tournament serves several purpose besides friendly competition. It raises money for local causes such as the Bobby Preston Scholarship Fund, Lake Placid High?School hockey and others. We also make a donation to the New York State Troopers' Survivor's Fund. In addition, and perhaps more significant, we host the family of a fallen officer. The family is invited here as our guests with all lodging, meals, site tours, local transportation, entertainment, and even gift cards from local businesses provided. Also, each team makes a presentation to the family with many of the gifts tailored to the likes and interests of the children.

This year, we were joined by the family of Pennsylvania State Police Cpl. Bryon Dickson. Cpl. Dickson fell victim to a deranged individual who opened fire on the Troopers' station with a high-powered rifle, mortally wounding Cpl. Dickson and seriously wounding another Trooper. The ensuing manhunt, which lasted longer than the Dannemora escape search, involved hundreds of both federal and state officers from Pennsylvania, New York, and New Jersey combing dense mountainous terrain before the cretin was apprehended.

Bryon's wife and their two sons, ages 7 and 9, along with her parents, had an absolutely wonderful experience in Lake Placid and Wilmington. Chaperoned by a New York trooper, they saw and experienced as much as possible in their relatively short stay. More than once Mrs. Dickson commented about how incredibly NICE the people are in this area.

This weekend also exemplified the kindness and consideration of the vast majority of our police officers in both the U.S. and Canada. Particularly during this period when so much erroneous information and negative innuendo regarding police officers pervades both mainstream and social media. We would like to take this opportunity to thank those who not only helped ensure a great time for the Dickson family, but who also expressed their support for the men and women who have taken the vow to serve and protect.

Thanks to the following: Denny Allen, Tom Broderick, Trooper James D'Ambro, Annie Edwards, Catherine and Chris Ericson, Art Lussi, Butch Martin, Debbie McLean, Nicole Mizner, Jeff Nemec, Jeff Potter, New York State Police Capt. John Tibbits, Josh Spanburgh, Jared Steenburge, Mary Stanton, Mary Catherine Spinelli, the great crew at the Olympic Arena, Adirondack Awards, Cake Placid Bakery, Crowne Plaza, Great Adirondack Steak & Seafood, Imagination Station, Lake Placid Pub & Brewery, North Woods Hotel and the Smith family, the students of Northwoods School, Olympic Training Center, Saratoga Olive Oil, Stouts & Stogies, There And Back Again, the UPS Store, and the State Police of New York, New Jersey, Vermont, Pennsylvania, New York State Corrections, the Ottawa Police, Akwesasne Mohawk Police, Homeland Security Task Force and Syracuse Police.

Thank you, all.
