Freddy is home!

To the editor:

On Saturday afternoon, Aug. 6, two of my dogs found a hole in my backyard fence and escaped. A few hours later I spotted them, but they split. I was only able to corral the older one, while our 8-month-old puppy Freddy disappeared into the woods. My heart sank.

For the next three days I searched frantically, but the odds are stacked against one person. Talk about searching for a needle in a haystack! But the thing is, I really wasn't alone. Almost immediately, people started sharing my Facebook missing dog flyer. I got calls from total strangers asking if he was found yet and if they could take a drive and look for him. While I was searching up and down Averyville Road I would stop every driver, walker, cyclist and runner I could and begin to say, "Hi, I'm looking for..." and before I could finish the sentence they'd say, "Oh, Freddy. We're looking!" Each day that went by I grew a little more frustrated and concerned about our pup, but it meant the world to me knowing that I wasn't the only one looking.

Then yesterday afternoon (Wednesday, Aug. 10), I was home for lunch after searching and doing some errands in town. I put the other two dogs out on the back porch, but while I was making a sandwich I heard something at the kitchen door leading to the garage. I didn't even have time to think. I opened the door and there he was! He acted like he'd just been out for a nice stroll. Ravenous, yes, and he slept like a log after a big lunch (including the tuna fish sandwich I had just made which he pounced on!), but none the worse for wear. What an incredible relief. All day yesterday I kept looking at him in happy disbelief that he had come home!

While he came back on his own, I can't express how much it meant to me that so many, many people-mostly folks I didn't know-actively helped in the search. We live in a caring community. Thank you all!
