Re: dog control laws

Lake Placid News

To the editor:

Your editorial comment in last week's Lake Placid News regarding "Dog days in Lake Placid" has prompted a number of comments from residents thinking this to be a new law and wondering what precipitated its passage by the village board. For clarification, Local Law No. 2-2016 replaced three local laws and amendments dating back to at least 1982, consolidating them into one local law to provide clarity and to correct related fines, seizure fees and impound fees.

The only substantive change is inclusion of frozen lake/water surfaces and shorelines within the village, requiring dog owners to pick up any feces left by their dog(s) and properly dispose of it. This change was prompted by concerns expressed by the public and our local watershed associations wishing to protect our waters. In particular, it addresses the need to have dog owners properly remove and dispose of dog waste from the ice surfaces of Mirror Lake and any other frozen bodies of water in the village.

Any new local law or amendment of any existing local law requires a public hearing with notice of public hearing published. Said notice for Local Law No. 2-2016 was published in the Lake Placid News and Adirondack Daily Enterprise, as well as on the village website. The public hearing was conducted on June 20. No member of the public appeared, and no written comment was received.

Aside from the confusion, constructive ideas were heard - possibility of a dog park and your suggestion of a doggy day care.
