Help Lake Placid schools reach beyond the basics

July 7, 2016
Lake Placid News

To the editor:

Lake Placid Central School District's new Educational Opportunity Fund is an opportunity to invest in the present and future of local students, and in the future of our community. Many have already donated and we wish to thank them for their generosity.

Launched in January 2016 at Adirondack Foundation, the Educational Opportunity Fund supports educational improvement efforts that benefit the children of Lake Placid and Wilmington. The fund augments the efforts of administrators, teachers, the Board of Education, parent organizations and the greater community as a source of ideas, expertise, guidance, funding, connections and volunteers.

Run by a board of local volunteers, the fund's mission is to advance educational opportunities, to enhance the learning and life chances of Lake Placid Central School District children and to help ensure the long-term quality and vitality of the school district and surrounding communities. Modeled after a handful of highly successful organizations that support public schools in New York state, the fund will underwrite projects and initiatives outside of the district's operating budget.

It's tough to ask the community to give, especially when it's already supporting the school district through taxes. But those taxes provide for the minimums, and we want to offer more to our students whenever possible. Additionally, many alumni who no longer live here still want to give back-this fund provides an opportunity for them to leave a legacy to the school and its children, now and into the future.

Many thanks to the generous donors who have helped this fund grow. To get involved, or to give, visit www.adirondackfoundation.org/funds/educational-opportunity-fundlpcsd.
