By making friends at FRIENDS, you are helping our children

June 2, 2016
Editorial , Lake Placid News

The annual Spring Carnival & Bazaar this Saturday, June 4, is an ideal time to meet members of the Lake Placid Elementary School's parent-teacher organization - called FRIENDS - and learn how you can get involved to help students.

The group is still in need of volunteers and board members, and the organization will not continue for the 2016-17 school year if they don't see more participation from families.

Over the past few years, there has been a significant decline in parent volunteerism at FRIENDS, according to co-presidents Desiree Skutt and Megan Lyon, Treasurer Julie Karp and Secretary Brandy Holzer.

"With this trend in participation, it will not be possible to continue to host these traditional fundraising events going forward," they wrote in a recent plea to the community. "The funds that support these fun and engaging learning experiences will no longer be available through this long-standing model of financial support for our school community."

FRIENDS is a volunteer group of parents, caregivers and LPES faculty. Their goals include the enhancement of student experiences by assisting school staff, parents and the community in planning and funding school-related projects.

In addition, FRIENDS helps fund student activities that aren't in the school budget. During the 2014-15 school year, the group raised about $6,000 for programs.

People interested in volunteering for FRIENDS may contact Megan Lyon at or Desiree Skutt at

We encourage you to attend the Spring Carnival & Bazaar, held from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday at the elementary school. It is a major fundraising event, and FRIENDS members are hoping to engage new parents and volunteers for the organization. Learn about what FRIENDS does for our local children and the community.
