Adirondack Health expansion benefits the North Country

March 3, 2016
Editorial , Lake Placid News

To stay relevant, being flexible and planning for the future is a must. That is why the Adirondack Health Foundation is embarking on a $33 million campaign to expand for the future health needs of the area. The Future of Care Campaign will raise money for a new surgical service department for Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake and a health and medical fitness center in Lake Placid.

There have been changes in technology, improved recovery time and more focus on wellness and prevention. Today's industry requires healthcare providers to keep up with the growing needs of their patients by investing in state-of-the-art diagnostic tools, more informed staff on the latest discoveries and techniques and improving the quality of life with wellness programs.

Retiring CEO Chandler Ralph explained that the new surgical service department is antiquated and in need of a more efficient layout. The machinery is bigger and so are the number of team members working on a patient. With that in mind, they designed it with equipment on the ceiling and room for staff to move about the patient.

We are very lucky to have a hospital in a our small, rural community and fortunate that they are forward thinking. That is why their plan to have a health and medical fitness center in Lake Placid makes a lot of sense.

Building the Lake Placid Health and Fitness Center will provide everyone from young athletes to the aging baby boomers with preventative care, fitness, rehabilitation and wellness programs. Their focus will be to improve strength, fitness and independence for patients of all ages. The new building will house a fully equipped emergency department, a medical fitness center with a four-lane lap pool, Olympic-caliber orthopedics and diagnostic imaging, a primary care clinic including pediatrics and behavioral health services, as well as a dental clinic.

It is hoped that the Lake Placid Health and Fitness Center will be a cornerstone in the proposed Global Center of Sports Excellence, which would include the U.S. Olympic Training Center, USA Luge and the state Olympic Regional Development Authority.

Another plus to Adirondack Health's expansion is that health care is a growing need and therefore a growing business, which means it will create much-needed jobs in our area. We support the hospital building on their legacy of healing and look forward to seeing it become a reality.
