‘Placid Pitch’ perfect ... thank you

February 4, 2016
Lake Placid News

To the editor:

Firstly, I want to forward my heartfelt thanks to Andy Flynn and Antonio Olivero for thinking of me for the new editorial Small World (in the Jan. 29 issue of the Lake Placid News). Not being the subject of anything other than a few choice words from coach pre or post game in the sports page, I hope the readers of the Lake Placid News didn't mind the subject matter on the front page, even when Andrew Weibrecht was finishing second in Kitzbuhel with another amazing run. Congrats, fella!

From my overseas family, friends and neighbors, to those of you here at home, I have received so many unbelievably positive responses to the article that I wouldn't have dreamed possible 20 years ago. I still pinch myself when I wake up where I loved to come coach soccer in the summer for two weeks and a number of things happened and helped me stay, have continued to support me ever since, and that my friends are so many of you.

I wanted to extend my appreciation following the story.

If you helped me with finding housing, an in between job or two, opened your home to me for a Thanksgiving dinner or came to say hello at one of your restaurants, thank you.

If you gave me a position or volunteered for me at the New York Olympic Regional Development Authority, trusted me with a microphone, drove a bobsled, appeared personally or jumped for an event, thank you.

If you have ever sent your children to or worked at a Lake Placid Soccer Center camp, thank you.

If you supported sons or daughters playing for me at Saranac Lake, North Country Community College or Lake Placid High School, thank you.

And finally, to my wife Petra, daughter Weber Jane and my in-laws Horst and Edith Weber, for whom I now work full time and appreciate what it takes to run your own business in this beautiful village, thank you.

I know I could not have done any of this without the support of you all.

I have been amazed by the warmth of which you have all welcomed me into your community, and together we will continue to do so for the people of the region, the tourists and athletes who flock here year round.

Cheers,

Stuart Hemsley
