Other reasons to thank Seney

To the editor:

Shirley Seney made significant political contributions in the Saranac Lake section of North Elba that were not mentioned in her obituary. Shirley and her predecessor Matt Clark provided Historic Saranac Lake - and several other nonprofit organizations - office space in the then-little-used North Elba Town House in Saranac Lake, and unlike other public officials she held regular office hours there for her constituents.

Probably her most important contribution here was her fierce advocacy for the redevelopment of Will Rogers Hospital as an assisted-living facility. Without her determination, local government would not have approved the initial payment-in-lieu-of-taxes agreement which made the project financially feasible. Without her, our community would not have the successful business that Saranac Village at Will Rogers has become, introducing a new model of senior housing to the Tri-Lakes market, nor would a prominent historic building be once again in active use. The result is a facility that allows seniors to remain independent in our area, near friends and family. Saranac Village at Will Rogers provides a home where residents can enjoy leisure activities, a social life and a sense of community. It's a great use for a wonderful historic building. We have Shirley Seney to thank for that.
