Supervisor lauds firefighting effort

Lake Placid News

To the editor:

To the residents of Lake Placid:

It is a testament to the resiliency and spirit of this community and region that Lake Placid would have a major structure fire in its main business district on a Saturday night and host an Ironman for 2,500 athletes early Sunday morning. It was an amazing collaborative effort by volunteer firemen from around the area, emergency service personnel, shopkeepers, hotels, restaurants, the visitors bureau, Department of Conservation, New York State Health Department, Village employees and so many more.

As a community leader I am often asked why it is necessary to allocate sizeable expenditures for state-of-the-art fire equipment as it burdens the tax levy. Well now you all know why! Had it not been for this important equipment we could have lost the entire Main Street block and put many lives at risk.

Too often such actions are taken for granted. This morning, Monday, Main Street is clean, the fire debris is gone and its business as usual. And the reason is due to the quality of our people, our workers, our volunteers and the character of this town.

Kudos to Lake Placid. It's why this is a special place!!! We all should be proud!!
