Property owners thank the firefighters and the community

Lake Placid News

To the editor:

We have always known that our volunteer firefighters are dedicated, hardworking, brave men and women. But Saturday, on Main Street everyone got to experience it first-hand. These brave, selfless firefighters from Lake Placid, Saranac Lake, Keene, Wilmington, Ausable, Jay, Paul Smiths & Bloomingdale were able to contain what could have been a town-wide disaster. Because of their quick and skilled response, the fire was contained to two buildings. We watched how quickly it jumped from the first building to the second. It could have easily torn through Main Street knocking out our beautiful downtown in one fell swoop. Thanks to these brave volunteers, that did not occur. Most importantly, and thankfully, nobody was injured.

We are proud of and grateful to all of these crucial members of our community who are almost all volunteers. Please remember to support your local fire departments, as community support is the largest part of their funding. It may be the most important donation you give.

Our hearts go out to all of the people that were displaced by the fire. It has been incredible to see our community spring into action to support each other. We are blessed to live among such giving and generous people. There is no way to thank you all adequately.

If you want to help, please reach out to the Red Cross. They are handling the disaster relief for the victims. You can reach them Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. at 518-694-5123 or 877-733-2767 after hours.
