North Elba has an excellent service for senior citizens

To the editor:

As I was getting on the North Elba bus recently, a woman approached me, asking where this bus will take us. My reply was that we are going to the North Elba Town Hall, where senior citizens are socializing and are being served inexpensive lunch Monday through Friday. The Nutrition Program for the Elderly is funded by the Office for the Aging and operated by ACAP (Adirondack Community Action Programs) in Elizabethtown for the Lake Placid program. In the event that you are a senior citizen or know somebody who is in need of such services, here are more details.

A different menu is offered every day at noon. Debbie is the site manager, and the bus driver picks up each senior from his/her home in the morning and drops them off in the afternoon. Both the manager and the driver are experienced in dealing with senior citizens and their needs. Debbie has a great sense of humor, and the driver is familiar with Lake Placid's streets and corners. Both Debbie and the driver are devoted to serving the senior citizens over and above their job requirements. Recently I heard a passenger telling the driver, "You are my hero," because he found some of her belongings.

After arriving in the morning, seniors have a choice of tea or coffee. Healthy food is always served, together with dessert. Activities before lunch include either exercise or bingo on certain days of the week, and after-lunch shopping trips to Aldi, Hannaford and Price Chopper are available on some days. On other days, trips to the banks, the post office or drug stores are scheduled. A night meal is offered twice a month. Also, twice a month, a day trip is available to either Plattsburgh or Malone. Transportation is free.

By the way, many of us are convinced that an appropriate sign at or near the entrance to Town Hall would be helpful in letting residents know about this great offer for seniors. While the food and transportation are essential to some senior citizens, the friendship and socialization are equally important. All of us who benefit from the services are most grateful for everything we can enjoy in Town Hall. Thank you.

If you would like additional information, please call Debbie at 518-523-2730 or the driver at 518-304-3486.
