Time for more spring cleaning

May 7, 2015
Editorial , Lake Placid News

Even Mother Nature participates in spring cleaning every year when she clears the ice off our lakes and ponds.

The ice officially went out on Mirror Lake on Wednesday, April 29 and on Lake Placid lake on Friday, May 1.

Now it's time for the rest of the town to be cleared of garbage and clutter, swept and dressed up with flowers and fresh paint for a busy tourist season.

Lake Placid Beautification workers have been planting pansies around town and cleaning out gardens. Adopt-a-highway crews are cleaning up the roadways. And Lake Placid Garden Club volunteers are clearing gardens.

The village, town and state highway crews have been furiously picking up and sweeping sand and debris from the streets and roadways in the area.

Walkers, runners and bicyclists are especially grateful, as spring cleanup coincides with the start of the outdoor training season for upcoming races. Sand, rocks and sticks are hazardous when training along the bicycle lanes. These athletes have invested many hours of training and hundreds, even thousands, of dollars in equipment and race fees, so the quick effort to clean the shoulders is appreciated. There has been a clear improvement over the past couple of weeks. Kudos to our municipal crews!

We encourage Lake Placid residents to participate in the Village Clean-Up on Saturday, May 9. Registration will be at the Mirror Lake village beach house from 9 to 10 a.m. Volunteers will be assigned streets to clean and will be rewarded with a spread of pizza and sandwiches at 11:45 a.m., just before the Plunge for a Cause at noon in Mirror Lake.

We've been blessed with some pleasant weather this past week, and we hope it continues. It's been a long winter, and many people are getting their outdoor chores done as quickly as possible so they can go outside and play.

Now if Mother Nature could do something about all that snow in the woods, we'd be all set. Looks like we all have some spring cleaning left to do.
