Back to the basics: World Figure Championships coming to Lake Placid

May 8, 2015
By CHRISTIE SAUSA - For the News , Lake Placid News

LAKE PLACID - Figure skating began with the discipline of Compulsory Figures (also known as School Figures), which is the practice of creating precise tracings on the ice in certain patterns including figure eights.

Until 1990, Compulsory Figures were a part of world and Olympic figure skating competition, and some figure skating celebrities considered mastery of compulsory figures one of the factors that produced great skaters.

Now, Compulsory Figures will make a comeback on the world stage in Lake Placid.

The inaugural 2015 World Figure Championship and Figure Festival will be held Aug. 25 to 29, creating a new legacy of World Figure Competition while offering the opportunity to introduce newcomers to the discipline. The Figure Festival will be followed by the World Figure Championship.

The Figure Festival will be Aug. 25-27, with interactive workshops to create a supportive learning environment for all ages and abilities to learn the Compulsory School Figures. Figure Festival skaters will be encouraged to learn from Figure Skating Olympians all the aspects of the edges, turns, circle-eights, loops, serpentines and paragraph figures.

Figure tests and ISI figure competitions will be included in all the Figure Festival opportunities. Coaches are encouraged to sign up as well and bring students to learn the foundation of figure skating at the festival. Some local skaters and coaches are already planning to participate in the Figure Festival and/or the World Figure Championship.

"I am thrilled to brush up my figures for the World Figure Championship and will be participating in the Figure Festival portion," said adult skater and former Skating Club of Lake Placid President Rosemary Gole. "This is a historic event that I would not miss. I started skating as an adult so the dream of reaching the eighth test and competing in the new World Figure Championship is just that: a dream. However, I am so excited to be there to watch and give my support to the most accomplished skaters in the sport."

"I am very excited for the 2015 World Figure Championship & Figure Festival," said coach Alicia Walter, a gold (8th) figure test medalist. "This event will create a great opportunity to encourage all to learn the figures and to reveal the truly important foundational role that they have in our sport.

"I will be attending the Figure Festival with a group of my students and I cannot wait to share my joy and passion for the discipline of figures."

Following the Figure Festival, the World Figure Championship will be held August 28-29, in the 1932 Olympic Arena. Only those who have completed their Gold (8th) Figure Test (the highest in the discipline) or who qualified to compete the Pre-1992 World and Olympic Figure Skating Championships will be qualified to compete in the Championship. The event will be judged solely from the tracings left on the ice by the competitors, eliminating potential bias, and the ice will be painted black to enhance visibility for judges and spectators.

World figure skating celebrities are expected to participate and

judge, bringing Olympic legends to the Olympic Center and renewing interest in this important aspect of the sport.

"Compulsory Figures are to a figure skater what the scales are to a musician. The 2015 World Figure Championship & Figure Festival will rewrite history of the all too often misunderstood foundation of our sport," said Lisa Fedick, chief referee of the 2015 World Figure Championship. "I am both excited and humbled to be a part of this event and to be in the company of some of the greatest skaters of all time."

More information will be released and reported as it becomes available. The World Figure Championship organizational team of Peak Edge Performance, Inc. (member of ISI) will be organizing this event. For more information, go to
