Joseph Michael Newman, as told by his girlfriend

Lake Placid News

To the editor:

As some of you may have read, Joseph Michael Newman fell to his death in Lake Placid March 4. What some of you may not know is who Joe was. I would like to share that special memory with you.

Joseph Michael Newman was born Sept. 21, 1989, in New Orleans, Louisiana. Many who knew him called him Joe; however, he called himself my dark angel (influenced by his love for the Gothic lifestyle). Joe loved to sing, write poetry and short stories, play video games and draw. Joe was the kind of man who loved to make people smile, would offer a helping hand when you needed it, and always greeted you with a warm hug, always with a smile. He was kind and gentle. Joseph suffered from depression, Asperger's syndrome, which is a form of autism, and schizoaffective disorder. This did not slow him down; it only made him even more special and understanding of others.

On April 24, 2014, Joe moved to Lake Placid to live with me and friends. Joe inspired me on every level and loved everyone unconditionally, especially me. Joe had a way with words; he made me feel like a goddess. He captured my heart, and I'll cherish these memories and love him forever. I say "love" because I believe his spirit forever lives on. Joe spoke of his dreams with me often, two in particular: One was to be a writer, and the other a singer. Joe knew how to help others see the beauty in this world and in life through his loving and caring nature, along with his artistic abilities. Joseph's memory lives on in everyone he has ever touched, including his family, friends and myself. Not a day goes by when I do not think of him, how he touched my heart and the lives of others in such a positive way.
