Remembering Jack Kendrick

April 9, 2015
Lake Placid News

To the editor:

It has been some years since I read anything about John Kendrick in the Lake Placid News. I am very sorry to hear of his death and I extend my sympathy to his family and so many close friends.

Jack ("Mr.K" as we called him at Cazenovia Central School) was our senior year English professor. We graduated in 1960. He was dynamic, athletically energetic as a teacher, original in his approach as to how an English class should be enjoyed. We didn't read Shakespeare; we acted it. One week we were acting "Romeo and Juliet." Mr. K gave me the part of Friar Lawrence because he thought that there was "something priestly about my manner and bearing."

Well, Mr. K was also a "prophet" for I was ordained a Catholic Priest in 1969 and have been active in a variety of ministries including a few years teaching in Rome Catholic High School in Rome, N.Y. There were a few times when the vice principal would look in through the window in the door of my classroom and kind of shake her head as to "what was going on." Thanks, Jack, for the memories and awesome example that I shall never forget. If it's all right with you, I'll offer a Mass for you every now and then as a sincere sign of my gratitude for what you meant to us and what you taught me beyond words. Keep smiling and enjoy paradise!

Fr. Vince Long
