Don’t sell the Legion

April 9, 2015
Lake Placid News

To the editor:

I have just received a letter from Jordana Mallach dated March 2015, saying that American Legion Post 326's membership is shrinking, the bar isn't providing the income it once did and that "we" should close the building. By that she means sell the Legion building.

Jordanna says we should not in any way be shutting down the existence of our American Legion post but rather evolving as an organization. NONSENSE. What Post 326 needs is an increase in membership. Sell the building, and membership will fall to a handful. How will the post attract new or younger members without the building? How will you attract "active" members when you offer no action?

Selling the Legion should not be decided by a vote of a half-dozen board members. The decision should be by written ballot of the entire membership. Shouldn't we also consider how hundreds of members who have passed on would feel?

Triple the size of your board. Organize a membership drive. Seek out new and younger members. Encourage volunteerism.
