Staff rose to synchro skating challenge

February 12, 2015
Lake Placid News

To the editor:

The Olympic Authority and the Skating Club of Lake Placid recently hosted the 2015 Eastern Synchronized Skating Championships at the Olympic Center.

This event consisted of over 2,300 athletes and coaches, plus well over 1,500 family members and officials who, for three days, doubled the population of Lake Placid. An event of this size could not be held without the help of a large number of volunteers and organizations.

I would like to thank the more than 150 volunteers who made this event run smoothly, and for creating a helpful, cheerful and extremely pleasant atmosphere within the building. I would also like to thank the Lake Placid village police and the New York State Police for keeping everyone safe and for their patience with dealing with the more than 50 charter busses that traveled through Lake Placid and Saranac Lake during the event. Thanks also to Mike Ritchie and the staff of the Saranac Lake Civic Center who made their facility available for teams to practice. You made everyone feel welcome.

This event is particularly challenging to the staff at the Olympic Center, with over 3,000 people coming and going each day for three days. As always, you rose to the challenge. The building was clean and safe, and the ice was of world-class caliber. The schedule was very tight, but at no point did we run behind, which is a tribute to all involved.

There was not one department within the Olympic Authority which was not involved in this event, and I would like to thank you for your efforts, not only for this event but for all of the support you continue to give the Olympic Center.

In the world of figure skating, Lake Placid is a special place that is held in high regard, not only because of our history but because we continue to bid on prestigious events and conduct them to a high standard. We are able to do this because of the dedication and resourcefulness of the volunteers and staff. You have set the bar very high, and I appreciate all that you do.
