Lake Placid News

LAKE PLACID - The cross-country ski center at Mount Van Hoevenberg opened for the season today.

Staff at the state Olympic Regional Development Authority-run facility reported 15 kilometers of trails open, with a primary surface of packed powder and a crusty secondary surface.

Flatter terrain on one side of the nordic center is groomed, along with several other trails. There wasn't enough snow for tracks to be set yet, but the facility's staff said that could happen tomorrow if the area gets the 2 to 4 inches of snow forecast tonight.
