"A lot of new teachers," Catania said. "We're holding fast at small and reasonably small class sizes."

Some of the teacher hires include: Jenny Winch, third-grade teacher; Denja Weibrecht, second-grade teacher; Jason Leon, fifth-grade teacher; Melissa Latella, third-grade teacher; and Whitney Emery was hired as a substitute for the first half of the next year. Leon has been a teaching assistant for several years with the district. Brian LaVallee, will split his time in between the Middle School in Lake Placid and Saranac Lake Central School District. LaVallee teaches technology classes. Jason Hubbard was hired as a full-time special education teacher. Michele Kulina was hired as secretary to the main office in the Elementary School.

Catania said the district has five goals for the upcoming year: improved communication both in the schools and within the community, applying technology more effectively to enhance learning, empowering teachers to take more of a leadership role in guiding the district toward excellent instruction, a more engaging rigorous and meaningful instruction and to address the opportunity gap and its impact on student learning.
