GE Africa chief speaks Saturday

LAKE PLACID - Jay Ireland, president and CEO of General Electric Africa, will be in town Saturday, Aug. 9, discussing resources and knowledge for development in Africa.

The event begins at 8:30 a.m. with breakfast in the Mountain View Room of the Visitors Bureau and Conference Center on Main Street. The presentation is at 9 a.m.

Ireland started his GE career in 1980 in financial management and has since worked as an U.S. Army officer, president of NBC Universal Television Stations and Network Operations, and manager at GE Asset Management, a firm with $120 billion in assets. He's overseen revenues of more than $2.4 billion in aviation, power generation, oil and gas, health care and rail transportation and earned several awards as CEO of GE Africa.

Ireland said he is "very pleased to be speaking here in Lake Placid," and wants innovation in technology and infrastructure will to give a prosperous future for Africa with the help of the U.S.

Ireland is also vice chairman of the Corporate Council of Africa, board member at the Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation and a trustee of St. Lawrence University.

He will have just returned from the U.S. Africa Summit, where he launched he Power Africa White House energy initiative with President Barack Obama.
