Home stretch before Ironman

Speedo Runners spotted in Lake Placid

July 25, 2014

LAKE PLACID - Ironman triathletes bared some skin on Friday morning running down Main Street. The athletes said they were blowing off steam before the big race on Sunday.

About 20 people gathered out front of Lake Placid Pub and Brewery in Speedos, underwear and other funny hats and outfits. They jogged down Main Street at 10 a.m. and then doubled back to their starting point at the Lake Placid Pub & Brewery.

Andy Thomas, 33, of Buffalo, organized the event for the second year. Thomas, who has competed in Ironman before, is volunteering as a kayak swim spotter for this year's triathlon.

"It's just something to kind of relieve pressure and do something fun," Thomas said. "There's a lot of serious people here, so this is just sort of a way to break the ice and have fun for a little while."

Thomas said the idea is a spinoff of the Underpants Run that happens in Kona, Hawaii.

"This kind of piggybacks off the underwear run they do in Kona," Thomas said. "We're always here every year. We love this race and love coming here, so we just decided to do the Speedo Run."

Nathan Clupp, 20, of Newfane, Niagara County, said he was excited to do Speedo Run for the second year.

"I did it last year (here); it was fun," Clupp said.

Another Speedo Runner, Danny Arnold, 56, of Albany, will compete in the Lake Placid Ironman on Sunday for the fifth time. He has been training for it for a year.

"Gonna have a great time," Arnold said of the Speedo Run. "We've all trained very hard for the year, and it's all about the journey, so on race day we all going to be very serious."
