A dead body was found Wednesday afternoon, June 18, at the Cobble Hill Golf Course in Elizabethtown, an apparent suicide, according to state police.

Golfers discovered the body in a wooded area between the the third hole fairway of the golf course and state Route 9N. The golfers called 911, and state police responded to the scene at 2:40 p.m.

State police Public Information Officer Jennifer Fleishman said Timothy H. Cox, 64, of Elizabethtown, was found deceased at the scene with a gunshot wound to the head, which appeared self-inflicted.

"A shotgun was located next to his body," Fleishman said. "The scene was consistent with a suicide."

A 2003 Ford Focus registered to Cox's wife was located about 50 feet from the body.

Essex County Coroner Walter S. Marvin authorized the removal of the body to Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake. The car was towed.

An autopsy was performed Thursday, June 19.
