Police: Keene man threatened to kill relative

June 2, 2014
By MATTHEW TURNER (mturner@adirondackdailyenterprise.com) , Lake Placid News

KEENE - The woman a Keene man threatened to kill is related to him, state police reported.

Investigator Jacob Byron, the lead officer on the case for state police, said Lyman G. Harris knew the woman he threatened well.

"It was a relative," Byron said.

Byron did not disclose the identify of the woman or how she was related to Harris, and did not say whether Harris had a prior criminal record. Court officials in the central New York town of Sullivan, where the alleged crime occurred, were not aware whether Harris had a criminal history.

Harris, 67, carried a long rifle into the Sullivan woman's home, forcibly entering at 11:30 p.m. on May 15, Oneida state police reported. He then tied her up to a support pole in the basement and gave her the option of either being shot by him or drinking antifreeze.

Harris did not follow through with his threat to kill the woman. He was later arrested by state police and at 3 p.m. May 22 at his home in Keene and brought to jail in Madison County. He was charged with first-degree burglary, a felony.

Harris' preliminary hearing was scheduled for Tuesday but was postponed for June 11 at 11 a.m.

"He's still remanded in Madison County Jail in lieu of a felony hearing," Byron said. "Bail was not lowered at that time. There was no order of protection issued subsequent to the arrest."

Bail was set at $250,000 cash or a bond of $500,000.

It's a small town here in Keene, but not many people said they know Harris when asked by the Enterprise. Others did not want to talk about it.

"He's new to the area," said John Hudson, the town of Keene's code enforcement officer. Hudson did not know Harris but knew he moved here recently.

Harris lives at 3166 state Route 73 in Keene, according to Essex County property tax records. He moved to Keene in 2012 and built a home.

Jenny Quinn of Keene said she never saw Harris before she heard about him in the newspaper.

"I didn't know him at all - never met him," Quinn said "I don't think a lot of people knew him."
