AuSABLE?FORKS - AuSable Forks Elementary School students honored local veterans with a special ceremony called "A Salute to Veterans" in the school's gym on Wednesday, May 21.
The fifth and sixth graders formed two platoons, marched in review and executed physical exercises to recognize the service of the veterans. "Taps" was performed by High School Jazz Band students Ridall Kirchner and Kendra Niemann.
The ceremony is organized annually by sixth-grade teacher Marty Remillard, who is a former captain in the United States Army. The veterans had a chance to answer questions and recount some of their military experiences.

The students also read two essays describing their feelings about veterans and their service to our country. Twelve local veterans attended the ceremony, and four had served during World War II. The ceremony was filled with respect, remembrance, patriotism and gratitude. One veteran said the student review "was one of the best he had ever received."
