Water main shut off on Sentinel Road, Lake Placid

LAKE PLACID - A water main on Sentinel Road (Route 73) was shut down temporarily today due to the trunk sewer line construction. It was turned back on around 1 p.m.

Lake Placid Public Works Superintendent Brad Hathaway said the water main pressure will be turned down for a few hours Thursday morning. The water is being turned off for the workers' safety.

"Where they are digging the sewer line, they are coming across an 8-inch water main," Deputy Mayor Art Devlin said. "It's hanging above the pit, and they are working beneath it."

Hathaway said the shutoff is not affecting a lot of people in the area. Devlin said the workers will be placing notices on residents doors if their water will be turned off.

"Just people on either side of the road," Devlin said.

Kubricky Construction started digging Wednesday morning, closing the road at 3 p.m. The road will be intermittently closed during the project, which is expected to take two-and-a-half weeks.

During construction, cars are to detour from Route 73 via Mill Pond Drive, Old Military Road and Newman Road. Large trucks should avoid the small Newman Road and instead detour through Mill Pond Drive and Old Military Road to its intersection with Route 73 near the ski jumps.

Village Clerk Ellen Clark wrote in a release that the village and Kubricky are working together to minimize inconvenience for the public.

"The village will continue to stay in contact with Kubricky Construction to minimize road closures whenever possible," Clark wrote.

Many of the stores where the construction is taking place are open for business.
