Lake Placid is second home for many Olympians

February 3, 2014
By PETER CROWLEY - Adirondack Daily Enterprise Managing Editor , Adirondack Daily Enterprise

LAKE PLACID -- The U.S. bobsled, luge and skeleton teams are based in this two-time Olympic host village, so almost all of those athletes live here for at least several months a year.

So do several others, such as moguls skier Hannah Kearney of Vermont, who won a gold medal at the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver. They all have other towns they primarily call home, but they have friends, summer jobs and ties here.

Three -- Nick Cunningham, Justin Olsen and Matt Mortensen -- are sergeants in the New York Army National Guard.

Of the 230 members of the U.S. Olympic team, 31 -- 13.5 percent -- live here part-time. Add in the nine who call the Lake Placid area their main home -- either they grew up here or they live here year-round -- and you have 17.4 percent, more than 1 in 6.

Russia's freestyle aerials ski team also lives part-time in Lake Placid. The men and women spend every summer living and training here from May to October.

Many other 2014 Olympians have come to Lake Placid for training camps lasting weeks at a time. These include U.S. cross-country skiers, nordic combined skiers, ski jumpers and women's hockey players.
