Why my family won’t return to Lake Placid

January 30, 2014
Lake Placid News

To the editor:

On Christmas Eve, 15 members of my extended family gathered in Lake Placid for what was supposed to be a fun-filled, week-long reunion. Several days later, as we were trudging through Lake Placid in negative-5-degree weather, we were shocked to come across a truck containing no less than eight "sled dogs." The dogs were lying in short cages, fully exposed to the elements, without any food or water.

We're an eclectic bunch - ranging from hunters to vegetarians - and yet all of us were completely shocked and disgusted at how these dogs were being taken care of. Throughout the day, family members checked on the dogs. Without fail, all of the dogs were still lying in their cages in the frigid cold.

Needless to say, none of us patronized the dogsled operators, who clearly viewed the animals as money-making machines rather than loyal pets. Before leaving Lake Placid, however, all of us decided to take this one step further:

As long as Lake Placid allows cruel dogsled operations, we won't be returning or patronizing its businesses.
