Our Olympic 9 — and then some

January 30, 2014
Editorial , Lake Placid News

In the end, our area ended up with more Olympians than we even thought possible.

In last week's "Our Olympians" editorial roundup, we said the Adirondacks - specifically the Tri-Lakes area - would have either seven or eight Olympians competing in Sochi, Russia. Now we're happy to report we were wrong. There are nine.

Fortunately, Andrew Weibrecht squeaked out a spot on the Olympic alpine ski team. We had been worried because, despite his bronze medal in the 2010 Olympics, his injuries have held him back from his sport's top tier in recent years. But he's in.

Also in the last few days, we learned that doubles luger Jayson Terdiman, originally from Berwick, Pa., now makes his home in Lake Placid year-round. Therefore we added him to our list of local Olympic athletes - those who were born or raised here, or who have settled here year-round.

The U.S. bobsled, luge and skeleton teams are based in Lake Placid, so almost all of those athletes live here for at least several months a year. So do several others, such as Olympic champion moguls skier Hannah Kearney of Vermont. They all have other towns they primarily call home, but we're still proud to have them here. Therefore, we added a separate list for these 26 Olympians.

Many bobsled, luge and skeleton team coaches and staff live here, too. At the Olympics, our reporters Lou Reuter and Chris Knight - who leave for Sochi Monday - will make sure to pay close attention to the sliding races.

Also listed below are five 2014 Olympians who went to school in Lake Placid when they were younger, plus 15 from elsewhere in New York state.

Once again, we suggest you post this on your social media of choice, or print it out and put it on your refrigerator, bulletin board or wherever you post things. Show your pride in our local and New York Olympians!

Also, Russia's freestyle aerials ski team, men and women, spends every summer living and training in Lake Placid, from May to October.

Many other 2014 Olympians have come to Lake Placid for training camps lasting weeks at a time. These include U.S. cross-country skiers, nordic combined skiers, ski jumpers and women's hockey players.
