LAKE PLACID - Lake Placid cross-country skiers won the girls and boys relay events at the Olympic Ski Jumping Complex on Thursday.

The Blue Bombers' girls team of Sage Miller and Nina and Gabby Armstrong finished the course in 35 minutes, 14 seconds. Saranac Lake's team of Jackie Garso, Caroline Dodd and Sami Martin finished in 38:15.

Each girl skied 3.4 kilometers. Nina Armstrong had the fastest time overall in 10:46, while Gabby Armstrong finished second, just four seconds off her sister's pace.

Garso was third with a time of 12:10. She was followed by Dodd (12:34), Saranac Lake's Johanna Mohrs (12:36), Martin (13:31) and Miller (13:38).

In the boys race, the Blue Bombers' team of Scottie Schultz, Trent White and Henry McGrew finished in 29:17 to beat the Saranac Lake team of Ethan Wood, Bryce Hartmann and Witter Swanson. The Red Storm finished in 30:08.

Schultz had the fastest overall time of the day, finishing 3.4k in 9:16. Hartmann finished second in 9:28, Wood was third in 9:29, White took fourth in 9:52 and McGrew finished fifth in 10:19.

"It's really fun because Saranac Lake has some competitive racers, especially their boys," Blue Bombers coach Bill Fraser said. "So, it kind of pushes our boys."

Fraser said his team has done well this year in limited races

"I'm lucky to have a strong (team) and I have a lot of depth," Fraser said. "We've only had two races so far."

Fraser said one of the highlights of the season so far was an invitational race in Glens Falls. Lake Placid's boys and girls teams each took second place. Lake Placid's Carl Schultz and Nina Armstrong were the fastest individuals in the boys and girls races.

Saranac Lake is headed by Keith Kogut, who takes over for longtime coach Randy Young. This is Kogut's first year ever as a head coach of the team after being an assistant the last few seasons.

He likes what he sees from his squad this season.

"I've got a couple of great young boys," Kogut said. "Bryce Hartman and Ethan Wood. They are both going to be very competitive at the state level this year and in coming years, and we have some very solid leadership on the girls' side. Some of better skiers are Caroline Dodd, Jackie Garso, Sami Martin. We've got a nice group of kids."

Kogut, who oversaw Thursday's race, thought things went well.

"I'm really happy with the way all the kids skied," he said. "Actually from both teams. They all looked great."
