Time to turn on your holiday lights

November 27, 2013
Lake Placid News

To the Editor:

I am the 2013 head of the Lake Placid Holiday Decorating Committee. It has prompted me to anticipate the wonderful lights that grace our village each year.

As a child, Christmas decorations were very traditional. Our tree was decorated on Christmas Eve. Big red ribbons and garlands of greens decked the halls, and a single candle was placed in each window.

After college, I lived in Manhattan for several years and the windows of the stores and the general disposition of the city was magical for the weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

When I moved to Houston, Texas, I was in for a shock. I was surrounded by homes and neighborhoods that exemplified the phrase "everything is bigger in Texas."

I was discussing my simple childhood memories verses the traditions of extreme Texas holiday decorations and a wise friend said simply, "Decorations are for the children."

This season, when you see a small tree within someone's home or a simple wreath on a door or an elaborate display, please remember each decoration is to celebrate the holidays.

Have fun, and turn on the lights! We will choose a few for awards, but in my estimation, all are winners and I thank you for making the holidays brighter and more festive for the child within each of us.

The judging will be Dec. 2 to Dec. 6 from 4 to 9 p.m.
