Blue Bombers volleyball secures first win

LAKE PLACID - The Lake Placid volleyball team picked up its first win of the season on Oct. 8, shooting down rival Saranac Lake in three straight games.

The Blue Bombers won just their second game of the season with a 25-16 victory in the opening set. They kept it going with a 27-25 second game and 25-18 third.

Brenna Garrett put down eight kills to lead the way for Lake Placid. She also racked up 13 service points, four aces and four assists.

Taylor Maiorca did her part for the Blue Bombers with nine assists, three aces, two kills and seven points. Teammate Ally Wallace chipped in four kills, while Jordyn Santana contributed two aces, two digs and one block and Melissa Rath had three kills and one dig. Georgia O'Leary served one ace and six points.

Katie Burgess had a strong match defensively for Saranac Lake. The junior recorded 10 digs to go along with two aces and three kills. Teammate Ellen Miner chipped in three kills and two assists and Brittany Woodruff had an ace and three digs.

Lake Placid improved to 1-9 on the season with the win, while Saranac Lake fell to 1-8.

PLATTSBURGH - The Armstrong sisters occupied the top two spots in the girls race Oct. 8 as the Lake Placid cross country team took on Plattsburgh and Northeastern Clinton in dual meets.

Lake Placid junior Nina Armstrong crossed the line first with a time of 20 minutes, 2 seconds. Her sister Gabby, a freshman, was hot on her heels with a finishing time of 20:26.

Samantha Smith of Northeastern Clinton took third with a time of 20:50. Erin Skufca of Lake Placid finished 14th in 26:35.

The top Blue Bomber in the boys race was Forest Ledger, who placed sixth in 19:06. Teammate Curtis Rissberger took ninth in 19:24, while Scott Schulz was 10th in 19:29 and Nick Saulpaugh was 12th in 20:02.

Plattsburgh runners took the top five spots in the boys race, led by Jeriqho Gadway, who won the race in 16:14.

The Blue Bombers dropped all their team scoring matchups 15-50.

GIRLS SOCCER

Chazy 2, Lake Placid 0

CHAZY - The Lake Placid girls soccer team kept things close Oct. 8, but eventually relented during a 2-0 loss to state-ranked Chazy.

Rachel Pombrio accounted for both Chazy goals. She scored the first goal in the 20th minute of the first half, then put the game away with a marker at 34:06 of the second half.

Lake Placid goalkeeper Laura Stanton kept the Blue Bombers in contention by turning away 14 shots. The Eagles held a 20-4 shooting advantage in the game.

Chazy was ranked No. 7 in the latest state Class D rankings and has a 10-2-1 overall record.

Lake Placid is 3-6-2.

Northern Adirondack 3, Lake Placid 0

ELLENBURG - The Lake Placid girls soccer team's defense held strong against Northern Adirondack, but eventually had to settle for a 3-0 Northern Soccer League Division II defeat on Oct. 3.

The Bobcats held a distinct advantage in shots take with a 22-3 margin. Emily Barney made 17 saves for the Blue Bombers.

Northern Adirondack took a 1-0 lead 11:45 into the first half when Elle Warick found the back of the net. The Bobcats piled on in the second half with goals by Rachael Venne in the 12th minute and Danya Burl in the 34th minute.

BOYS?SOCCER

Lake Placid 2, Seton Catholic 1

PLATTSBURGH - Nzoni Thompson headed in the game-winning goal in the second sudden-death overtime on Oct. 2 to give the Lake Placid boys soccer team a 2-1 Northern Soccer League victory over Seton Catholic.

Thompson also scored the first goal of the game after taking a pass from Stuart Baird at the 16:27 mark of the second half. The Knights responded in the next 10 minutes, though, when Keegan Frenya scored on a pass from Adam Tedford.

Thompson's overtime goal came on a corner kick. Alex Brandes was credited with the game-winning assist.

Chris Kordziel earned the victory in goal for Lake Placid, which improved to 5-3-1 with the win. Keagen Briggs had 16 saves for Seton Catholic.

The Blue Bombers have beaten Seton Catholic in both meetings this season. They also swept the Knights in three games last year.

Lake Placid improved to 5-2-1 in league games and 5-3-1 overall with the victory. Seton Catholic is 6-3-1 in NSL play and 7-3-2 overall.
