Essex County board makes request for state to fix Whiteface highway

October 4, 2013
JESSICA COLLIER

ELIZABETHTOWN - Essex County supervisors are asking the state to repair the Whiteface Veterans Memorial Highway.

Wilmington town Supervisor Randy Preston asked his fellow supervisors to support a resolution asking the state - including Gov. Andrew Cuomo, Sen. Betty Little and Assemblyman Dan Stec - to push for money for the project in the state budget. The resolution was passed unanimously.

Preston said the highway and its surrounding infrastructure, which sees about 70,000 visitors a year, will need significant funding to make it safe again.

Preston noted that the North Country Regional Economic Development Council has recognized the highway for the second year in a row as important for the region. Since it's a state facility, though, NCREDC officials have said money for it needs to come through the state budget rather than the state grant process the council is part of.

"The state needs to come forward and preserve this national treasure for years to come," Preston said.

County board Chairman Randy Douglas said he mentioned the highway to Cuomo when he was in town last week.

"We'll keep bringing that to the governor's attention," Douglas said.

The governor will reveal his proposed 2014-15 state budget in January.
