Lake Placid News

LAKE PLACID - Michael Virtanen, the author of The River's Tale, and Phil Brown, the author of Adirondack Paddling, will sign copies of their latest books at Bookstore Plus in Lake Placid from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday, July 20.

The River's Tale is a suspense novel set in the Adirondacks. Alison Reade flees New York City to escape an obsessive ex-boyfriend and lands a job as a whitewater-rafting guide on the Hudson River. After she starts a romance with her charismatic boss, life seems good - until she discovers that the Adirondacks are not the safe haven she thought they were.

Virtanen, a political reporter in Albany, also is the author of Within a Forest Dark, which won the Adirondack Center for Writing's award for best fiction of 2007. The River's Tale is a prequel to that novel.

Adirondack Paddling is a guidebook that describes sixty flatwater day trips in the Adirondack Park, illustrated by color photographs and color maps. One of the appendices contains suggestions for multiday trips as well. Brown is the editor of the Adirondack Explorer newsmagazine, which covers environmental issues and outdoor recreation in the Park.

The River's Tale was published by Lost Pond Press of Saranac Lake. Adirondack Paddling was co-published by Lost Pond Press and the Adirondack Mountain Club.
