Frances M. “Betsy” Wine

Frances M. (Jones) "Betsy" Wine passed away Tuesday, July 9, 2013 at Horace Nye Nursing Home in Elizabethtown.

She was born July 18, 1922 in Rockland, Maine, the daughter of Sidney and Beatrice (Myer) Jones. She moved to Lake Placid in the late 1920s and was educated in the Lake Placid School System and graduated from Lake Placid High School. She moved to New York City and joined her Sister Rita. She joined the Woman's Army Core (WAC) May 12, 1944, and was stationed at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. She earned the Good Conduct World War II Victory Medal on Oct. 23, 1945. She was honorably discharged on Dec. 28, 1945. She had the honor of serving along with her sister Genevieve and her Brothers George, Jack, and Paul at the same time.

She spent many years living in San Clemente, Calif. and Las Vegas, Nev. She returned to the North Country in recent years living at Saranac Village at Will Rogers in Saranac Lake, Keene Valley Neighborhood Center, and most recently, Horace-Nye Nursing Home in Elizabethtown.

She is survived by her daughter, Laurie from Las Vegas, Nev.; her son Jeff; Two sisters, Rita Biss from Escondido, Calif. and Isabel Maxson from Santa Rosa, Calif.; one brother, Francis Paul Jones and his wife Esther from Lake Placid; her grandchildren; great-grand children; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by two brothers: Jack and David Jones; three sisters: Ethel Gedroiz, Genevieve Nagley and Helen Coomes.

There will be no calling hours. A memorial Mass was held at noon Monday, July 15 at the Reiss Memorial Chapel at Uihlein Mercy Center in Lake Placid with Rev. Patrick O'Reilly officiating. A graveside military service followed at 2 p.m. at the Essex County Veterans Cemetery in Wadhams.
